Does your school have an AI framework?

Generative AI is already in your classrooms. Every Australian school is now expected to have a clear, responsible approach to it. Here's a plain-language guide and a free starter template — or let us help you build yours.

Why every school needs one now

In 2023 every Australian education minister endorsed the Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools (reviewed and re-endorsed in 2025). It expects schools to use AI responsibly and to make their approach clear to staff, students and families. A framework isn't red tape — it's how you let teachers and students use AI with confidence, safely, and without crossing the integrity or privacy line.

The 6 things your framework must cover

The national framework is built on six elements. Here's what each means for your school — in plain language. Your starter template gives you a fill-in section for every one.

1

Teaching & Learning

AI is used where it genuinely helps learning and supports teachers' professional judgement — never replacing the skills students still need to build themselves.

2

Human & Social Wellbeing

AI use respects the wellbeing, dignity and diversity of everyone in the school community, and keeps people — not tools — at the centre.

3

Transparency

Everyone knows when and how AI is being used. AI-assisted work is disclosed, and decisions that affect students can be explained.

4

Fairness

AI is lawful, inclusive and accessible to all students, and is checked for bias so it doesn't disadvantage any group.

5

Accountability

A person is always responsible. AI outputs are reviewed by a teacher, tools are evaluated before use, and there is clear oversight.

6

Privacy, Security & Safety

Personal and student data is protected, tools are secure, and use is safe and age-appropriate — no sensitive data goes into unapproved tools.

A framework everyone can actually use

For school leaders

A clear position on AI, an approval process for tools, and the safety, privacy and accountability guardrails staff and families expect.

For teachers

Plain guidance on when and how to use AI, how to keep professional judgement central, and where the academic-integrity line sits.

For students

An age-appropriate “how we use AI here” — what's OK, what isn't, when to disclose AI help, and how to stay safe.

This guide is grounded in the Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools (education.gov.au) and NSW Department of Education generative-AI guidance (education.nsw.gov.au). It is a starting point, not legal advice — confirm against the current framework and your sector's policies before adopting.
